The thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) blood work is designed to diagnose thyroid gland underactivity (hypothyroidism) or overactivity (hyperthyroidism), which affects the overall thyroid function.
The TSH blood lab gauges the levels of TSH produced by the pituitary gland.
Individuals with a family history of thyroid disorders should get blood work for TSH. It is also recommended for those experiencing symptoms of hyperthyroidism like high blood pressure, hair loss, increased heart rate, vomiting, and weight loss. In addition, people suspected of hypothyroidism through conditions like fatigue, numbness, high cold tolerance, and weight gain would also take the TSH blood test.
Patients prescribed with thyroid drug treatment should get the TSH blood work before taking the medication. Otherwise, no special preparation is needed before getting the test.
The normal TSH in blood tests should fall within the range of 0.5 to 5.0 mIU/L. Getting a lower value suggests thyroid gland overactivity or hyperthyroidism. Conversely, a higher value entails underactivity in the thyroid gland or hypothyroidism.
