Chronic allergies aren’t just uncomfortable, with persistent coughing, watery eyes, and a stuffed-up nose. In certain cases, they can also be dangerous, with your body reacting so severely that you could go into anaphylactic shock. To help end your suffering or prevent a life-threatening incident, you can get an immunoglobulin E test.
Your body produces the immunoglobulin E antibody in response to allergen exposure, whether that’s pollen, animal dander, food, or mold. IgE can be measured by testing your skin or blood. The latter is advised if you have sensitive skin, can’t stop taking allergy medication, or need comprehensive allergy testing. The IgE test measures the levels of this antibody in your blood.
If you need medication to stifle symptoms such as wheezing, hives, congestion, or other common signs of allergies, you should take the IgE blood test.
You don’t have to take any special precautions before the IgE blood draw; in fact, you may be able to continue taking your allergy medication if needed. Talk to your physician or the lab for further instructions.
Different tests have different normal ranges. If your test report states that you have higher levels of IgE in your blood, that can be a sign you have an allergy, although this test doesn’t pinpoint which allergen is your trigger. If necessary, you can get further allergy testing, including tests for specific foods and environmental allergens.
You don’t have to suffer from unknown allergies. Personalabs offers a wide array of allergy tests as part of our comprehensive online collection to give you insight and information to move forward. If you’ve got questions about your allergies, we can help you get the answers.
Here’s how simple it is to order a test from Personalabs:
Step 1: Shop our allergy tests online. When you buy the test you want, download the appropriate lab order. (Depending on what state you live in, a doctor’s approval won’t be required for purchase.)
Step 2: Make an appointment for your blood test by using our handy location finder. You have access to more than 4,000 labs across the country because we partner with Quest Diagnostics and Labcorp.
Step 3: Take the test order to the lab and get your blood drawn.
Step 4: See your results in your secure Personalabs account. The test report typically arrives in 2 to 10 business days, but if you need results on a specific date, contact us.
