EBV Antibody Test
The Epstein-Barr virus (or EBV) may be best known as the cause of mononucleosis (aka, the “kissing disease”). The nickname is due to the fact that mono is highly transmissible if you come into contact with someone who is infected. Typical mononucleosis symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, and fatigue. An EBV AB VCA IgG blood test can help determine if you had or currently have the virus, and it’s one of several infectious disease tests you can find at Personalabs.
Viral capsid antigen (VCA) is an antigen produced by the Esptein-Barr virus. In response to the introduction of the virus into the body, the immune system produces two types of antibodies to fight the disease: IgM antibodies come first in the earliest stage of infection, followed by IgG antibodies, which permanently stay in your system. This test measures the level of IgG antibodies compared to the level of VCA.
This test is often recommended for people suffering common symptoms associated with EBV infection, especially if they have been in close contact with someone who has mononucleosis. The EBV IgG blood test can also confirm a past infection or determine if someone is immune to the virus.
There is no special preparation required for the Epstein-Barr AB to VCA IgG test.
Results less than 18.0 U/mL are considered negative for the virus antigen and antibodies; levels between 18.0 and 21.9 U/mL are considered equivocal, and anything above 21.9 U/mL is considered positive for an EBV infection, although more testing and other factors need to be considered to determine if it’s a current or past infection. If you want to speak with a board-certified physician about your results and a potential treatment plan, you can schedule a telehealth appointment with a Personalabs doctor.
