Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) Plus Calcium Blood Test

Use:

This test is used to find out the cause of calcium imbalances and to evaluate parathyroid function. This test can also diagnose and make a distinction between the 3 stages of hyperparathyroidism and can diagnose hypoparathyroidism.

Hyperparathyroidism is when there is an abnormally high level of parathyroid hormone in the blood, which causes bone weakness through loss of calcium. Hypoparathyroidism occurs when there is a low concentration of parathyroid hormone in the blood, which causes muscle spasms due to calcium and phosphorus deficiencies.

Symptoms associated with hypercalcemia (higher than normal calcium levels) are fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, and thirst.

Symptoms associated with hypocalcemia (lower than normal calcium levels) are abdominal pain, muscle cramps and tingling fingers or toes.
