This test is use to help diagnose thyroid autoimmune disorders, such as Hashimoto’s disease or Graves’ disease. An autoimmune disorder is when you immune system makes antibodies that attack normal tissue by mistake.
This test also helps in distinguishing thyroid autoimmune disorders from non-autoimmune thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
Some symptoms of Graves disease are enlarged thyroid, trouble sleeping, irritability or nervousness, hand tremors, heat sensitivity, increased sweating, rapid heartbeat, frequent bowel movements, thinning of skin or brittle hair.
Some symptoms of Hashimoto disease are fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, joint and muscle pain, constipation, thinning hair, or depression.
