TBIL, Total Serum Bilirubin, TSB
Have you noticed a yellowish tint to your skin or eyes? That can be a sign of jaundice, which in turn can be a side effect of some types of medications or several medical conditions, including:
But what causes jaundice? It’s a result of high levels of bilirubin, a substance in bile that your body needs to break down food. Bilirubin has an unmistakable yellow color (because it’s created by worn-out red blood cells), which turns your skin and eyes that jaundiced color. A bilirubin total blood test can assess your liver, gallbladder, and bile duct function to detect or help diagnose any problems. The TBIL blood test can be taken on its own, or it may be ordered along with other tests, such as:
This test will tell you how much bilirubin is in your system.
You may need a test if you have jaundice, along with other symptoms associated with liver issues, such as fever, abdominal pain, and dark urine. Your doctor may also recommend total bilirubin lab testing to monitor a medical condition related to your bile duct or gallbladder as well as your liver.
Typically, this test doesn’t require special preparations, but you can double-check the instructions with your physician or testing facility. Our tips on how to prepare for a blood test are also helpful to read before your lab appointment.
Your total bilirubin should fall between 0.1 to 1.2 mg/dL. A level of 2.0 mg/dL may lead to jaundice. If your results are outside the normal levels, your doctor may want to conduct more liver function tests or review your diet or medications to see if they are contributing to jaundice or other symptoms.
